Collie Motorplex receives additional funding

Motoring South West will receive $50,000 from the Shire of Collie to help facilitate the completion of the new track extension at the Collie Motorplex.

Currently the Collie Motorplex is the only track licensed by Motorcycling WA for road racing activity in the state.

The shire are hoping to expect an increase in visitors once the track opens and stage one of the extension is complete.

Since the shire has been project managing the track extension it has received a total of approximately $3 million in funding from the Department of Sport and Recreation, the Department of Regional Development, the Shire of Collie and MSW.

The track was inspected earlier this year in June by licencing agencies Confederation of Australian Motorsports and Motorcycling Australia to ensure compliance with related standards before granting the track accreditation.

The main thing that was preventing the accreditation and licensing of the track was the assembly and placement of around 11,000 tyres.

The tyres are bundled together and built to form a wall to ensure the safety of riders and drivers of the facility.

Building these involves drilling and bolting each tyre vertically and horizontally as well as fitting a conveyor belt to each tyre bundle.

The work required to complete the tyre wall is significant and MSW have been heavily relying on volunteer labour and work for the dole program to help lend a hand due to their limited financial capacity.

If the track is not opened in a timely manner it puts at risk several events including the National Historic Motorcycle event which is scheduled to be in September next year.

The shire are estimating the event is expected to attract over 5,000 visitors to Collie for a period of eight days.

At Tuesday night’s meeting the Shire of Collie council voted unanimously to provide MSW with an interest free loan of $50,000 which would facilitate paid labour to ensure quicker completion of any works which were preventing the track from gaining its accreditation.

The loan will be for a period of 10 years, payable semi-annually.

Council also voted to provide support to the Collie Motorplex where possible. In addition, Motorcycling Australia and Motorcycling Western Australia have also indicated their willingness to support the track.
