The 2018 Australian Quad Motocross Championship has been run and won with 27 year old West Australian, Luke Gaisford, taking out the title for his FOURTH time at the picturesque Stockton Park Circuit, home to the Collie Motor Cycle Club.

As with Day One the rivalry between Gaisford and Chris Bosnakis was evident from the get go of Day Two, with Bosnakis taking his third win for the championship in Round 3 on the picture perfect track under fantastic race conditions.

Going into Round 4, Bosnakis was leading the championship on 105 points followed by Gaisford in second on 96 points and in third was Andrea Cesari on 90 points.

During a thrilling display of racing in Round 4 from all twelve contenders, the “Luck of Luke” changed for the better in what can only be described as disaster for championship leader and long-time rival, Bosnakis.

Bosnakis and Gaisford both came flying down the main straight with Bosnakis in front by only 10 seconds, both champions headed into the first turn and over the jump, as they hit the jump Bosnakis went airborne, landed hard and broke his shock putting him out of contention for the remainder of the championship rounds. Gaisford went on to win rounds four and five making him the championship winner for 2018 on a strong 166 points.

Andrea Cesari had settled in the unfamiliar track by Day Two of the championship and placed third in Round 3 and second in both Rounds 4 and 5 finishing the championships comfortably in 2nd place on 154 points.

Jake Van Valet rounded out the podium placings in 3rd place on count back with Blake Croonen on 136 points.

After the excitement in team “4TEEN Industries” had subsided Luke Gaisford said of his championship win, “It was a great day of racing today taking 2 moto wins. Taking back to back championships is such a great feeling.  All the hard work by everyone has paid off and my new bike was awesome all weekend”.

Luke went on to compliment “4TEEN Industries” team mate, Blake Croonen , “ Well done to Blake Croonen taking a 4th on a count back overall and pulling the hole shot in the final moto of the year on my spare bike”.

“A big thank you to my team and family and friends for all their help every week, weekends and training days as well as all the long days spent at different tracks”

Luke has been now crowned the ATV Motocross Nationals Champion four times, in 2011, 2012, and 2017 and now in 2018.

Joining Gaisford in the winner’s circle were Keenan Murphy (8-U12 Years 60cc-90cc), Jae Dowsett with an unprecedented 175 points (12-16 200cc-300cc), Sienna Comito, (Junior Support 200cc Air Cooled Only), Michael Harcourt (Veterans), Darryl Maringoni (Clubman), Josh McKay (Intermediate) and  Waldo Hussie (Clubman/Vets Support).

All classes saw strong representation from all states of Australia and the Quad Riders Club of WA and Collie Motorcycle Club would like to thank all the entrants, families and supporters for being part of an awesome weekend of racing and friendly rivalry. Also for making the journey to Collie in the South West Region of Western Australia.

Motorcycling Western Australia’s president Tracy Simpson said the event was an outstanding success and credit to both the Quad Riders Club of WA and the Collie Motorcycle Club.

Tracy also complimented the clubs on their professionalism, organisation of the event and the excellent new venue facilities.

For Quad enthusiasts this was a weekend that delivered plenty of action to satisfy all everyone. Beautiful sunny weather made for slight dust and a few deep ruts later in the championship, but the hosting clubs managed to maintain perfect track conditions that allowed for plenty of overtaking opportunities and fantastic racing.

The Quad Riders Club of WA was only formed last year and the event has been an outstanding success and quite an accomplishment. Club treasurer, Lorene Soltoggio, commented after the event “The overall atmosphere of the event has been electric and very family friendly event.”

“The Jumbo Juniors Class were awesome fun for Jayden, Daniel and Michael making the most of the mini track, also the starts of all of the races were spectacular with every rider wanted that hole shot”.

Jemma Merrylees, who has previously won an Australian Women’s Championship said after her last Intermediate class race,'I finished 4th overall and missed out on 3rd by only 2 points. The track was definitely a tough one and at times I was unable to hold on. However the most enjoyable thing is being able to compete with the boys and showing that I am as quick as them and that I’m the only girl in their class.”

All the sideways action and high-flying jumps made for excellent spectator viewing that was backed up by brilliantly entertaining running race commentary by Morgan Melvin and the legendary Len Huff.

Len was celebrating 55 years of commentating motorsports this weekend, when I asked him how did that make him feel, in a typical Gruff Len Huff manner, “B….y  OLD! How do you think it makes me feel Blondie?” he replied, quickly followed by his deep laugh and a huge hug.  It made me realise that as a sport, on a whole, we need to honour these amazing legends of ours.

Their knowledge, commitment and dedication to the sport and people in it over decades are a phenomenal effort on their part.

When asked who shone in his eyes over the weekend Len said that Andrea Cesari hard worked really hard to come to grips with an unknown track and had a vast improvement over both days.

Once racing competed for the day we checked in with Air-Cooled Class competitor, Isabelle Maton #36, who had previously shared unfortunate incident from Day One’s racing.

Isabelle was feeling much better and said “Today I made my fastest lap of the event during the 1st race at 2.06 mins and then I was unlucky in the last race.  I got stuck again but am pleased that I achieved 4th for the overall competition”.

“Thanks to all my competitors for a fantastic racing weekend, Collie Motorcycle Club for the amazing venue, my sponsor Mindarie Motorcycles and everyone that helped out to make it a fantastic weekend”.
